Winter can be tough on our skin. The cold air, dry indoor heat, low humidity levels, and harsh winter wind can all zap our skin of moisture, leaving it looking and feeling dry, flaky, and dull. But with the right skincare routine and habits, you can protect your skin against winter dryness and keep it looking healthy and radiant all season long.

With the right care, your skin can thrive in the winter months.

Here are some tips for protecting your skin against dryness in winter:

Step 1. Moisturise daily

Moisturizing is key to keeping your skin hydrated in winter. Oil or cream-based moisturizers are better than lotions for normal to dry skin . Apply moisturizer directly to your wet skin after bathing to help trap surface moisture . If you have sensitive skin, choose a moisturizer without fragrance or lanolin

Step 2. Limit the use of hot water and soap

Hot water and soap can strip your skin of its natural oils, so try to limit your use of them. Take short, lukewarm showers or baths instead of long, hot ones . And when you do use soap, choose a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser that won’t dry out your skin.

Step 3. Humidify your space

Using a humidifier in your home can help add moisture to the air and prevent your skin from drying out. Set it to around 60%, a level that should be sufficient to replenish the top layer of the skin . If you don’t have a humidifier, you can also add moisture to the air by placing a bowl of water near your heating source.

Step 4. Protect yourself from the wind

Harsh winter winds can be tough on your skin, so make sure to protect yourself when you’re outside. Wear a scarf or mask to cover your face, and don’t forget to protect your hands with gloves or mittens.

Invest in your skin. It is going to represent you for a very long time.

Step 5. Avoid extreme cold

Extreme cold can also be tough on your skin, so try to limit your exposure to it. If you do need to be outside in extreme cold, make sure to dress warmly and cover as much of your skin as possible.

Step 6. Protect your skin from the sun

Even in winter, the sun can still damage your skin, so make sure to protect it. Wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 on any exposed skin, and don’t forget to protect your lips with a lip balm that contains SPF.

By following these tips and taking good care of your skin, you can protect it against winter dryness and keep it looking healthy and radiant all season long.
